In honor of Yom HaShoah (starting this evening and continuing through sundown tomorrow), here’s what one may expect regarding Holocaust remembrance and education when you visit Seattle this coming August.
Seattle’s Holocaust Center for Humanity was established in 1989 to teach tolerance and citizenship through lessons of the Holocaust. Its emphasis has been on providing resources for public and private school teachers to include Holocaust studies in their curricula.
Last October, Seattle welcomed the opening of the Henry and Sandra Friedman Holocaust Center for Humanity Museum — the first museum dedicated to the Holocaust in the Pacific Northwest.
During the IAJGS conference, from August 7-12, 2016, the museum will be featuring its core exhibit: “Through stories and artifacts of local Holocaust survivors, the museum’s exhibit engages visitors in the history of the Holocaust and challenges them to consider how each person’s actions make a difference.”
The core exhibit features a Torah rescued from Pribram, Czechoslovakia, provided to the museum by the Memorial Scrolls Trust.

The Holocaust Center is located at 2045 Second Avenue (on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Lenora, in downtown Seattle) and is open every Wednesday, and the first and third Sundays of the month, from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., or by appointment.
