Speaker Profile: Rhoda Miller

MillerRhodaRhoda Miller, Ed.D., CG has been a Certified Genealogist since 1998 specializing in Jewish research and Holocaust studies. Rhoda is a Past President of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island (JGSLI) and continues her leadership as a board member. With JGSLI, she is co-author of the forthcoming Arcadia Images of America book to be titled Jewish Community of Long Island. Under Litvak SIG, Rhoda volunteers as Co-coordinator of the Svencionys District Research Group, administers a Svencionys DNA group, and is webmaster of the JewishGen Kahilalinks Orlya, Belarus website. At Dowling College, Rhoda teaches genealogy and Holocaust courses.

“Evidence Analysis: Which is the Right Record?” (Tues-118), 10:30-11:45 A.M.

Utilizing the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS), this presentation will demonstrate methods of looking at your research to find gaps as well as evaluate findings, especially those with conflicting evidence. Holocaust records will be utilized to support the GPS.

 “The Wandering Yiddish Poet: Chaim Leib Fox” (Thurs-166), 10:30-11:45 A.M.

Lauren Fox, JGSLI’s website developer, knew she had Jewish roots but little more about her ancestry. Research revealed that her great-grandfather was the renowned Yiddish poet Chaim Leib Fox. Learn strategies and research techniques that helped Lauren learn more about how Chaim Leib Fox’s life intersected with Zionist activity in Palestine, WW I, the Holocaust, and eventual immigration to the U.S. and Canada. DNA, further research, and family stories revealed yet more about his ancestors and rabbinical connections.

 “Organizit: Reducing Your Genealogical Clutter” (Fri-110), 11:30 A.M. -12:45 P.M.

Organizit presents creative solutions and problem-solving ideas to genealogy researchers who are interested in getting organized in order to free up mental and physical space for more research! The concept of clutter, how it happens and what to do about it, will be discussed. The organization of digital and paper files, documents, photographs, correspondence, research projects, and research materials will be presented in a lively and entertaining manner. Methods of approaching a genealogy project, or subparts of a project, as well as planning for a research trip are also presented.
