“New Internet Resources for German-Jewish Research” (Mon-166), 3:00-4:15 P.M.
Every new year brings new Internet tools for genealogical research. Until recently, most on-line information consisted of transcriptions or indexes of censuses, vital registers and other lists. Today’s typical on-line source presents images of records themselves, with indexes present, in progress or planned.
We also have more different types of data, from address directories to newspapers and community newsletters. Archives and libraries offer on-line access to the papers and photos of families and researchers, books from generations past and more.
In Germany, Poland and other European countries, web sites commemorate Jewish communities and individuals from before and during the Shoah. Other sites offer transcription and critical description of gravestones.
My talk will present and demonstrate some of the most innovative and important new sites, including what to expect and how to avoid pitfalls. A complete list of web addresses discussed will be made available.
